Family, friends, and neighbors gathered at the Birdsong Event Center on Thursday, March 5, for an induction ceremony honoring new members of the Miller County High School Sports Hall of Fame.
The first inductees of the evening were members of the 1980 Girls State Championship Team. The team’s accomplishments included overcoming a 19-point halftime deficit during the Final Four to advance to the championship game, defeating Greater Atlanta Christian to claim the 1980 state title, compiling a 33-game winning streak, and winning back-to-back state championships. Mr. Jamie Ard enshrined the team, and Ms. Beverly Chapman delivered the acceptance speech on the team’s behalf.
Next to be inducted was the 1957 Boys Baseball Team. The team captured the Class AA state title in 1957 after defeating Gainesville High School. Mr. Tony Cook enshrined the team. Mr. Terry Bevis, Mr. Gordon Richardson, and Mr. Chuck Stapleton — three of the seven surviving members of that 1957 team — delivered the acceptance speech on behalf of their teammates.
The final inductee of the evening was Coach Alan Ingram. A longtime coach of multiple sports at Miller County High School, Coach Ingram is perhaps best remembered for his exceptional success coaching football. More importantly, he is known for the positive impact he has had on the lives of countless young men throughout his distinguished career. Coach Ingram’s son, Robert, enshrined his father, after which Coach Ingram delivered his acceptance speech.
Members of the Miller County High School Sports Hall of Fame Committee expressed their appreciation for the strong support shown by the community for the inductees. Committee members said they look forward to honoring the next group of inductees and invite community members to nominate candidates for consideration. Those interested in submitting a nomination may contact Miller County High School to obtain a nomination form.
